The Old Town Park in Łódź is located in the place of a large pond, drained in the 19th century. It intersects with the river Łódka, which cannot be seen, due to closing it in an underground canal because of the pollution and foul odor it had been emitting at the beginning of the 20th century. Time in the park is measured by a sundial. A great Moses-Monument of the Decalogue watches over the whole park. The monument is placed on the site of the synagogue destroyed during the war.
After drying the pond, at the beginning of the 20th century, a densely populated commercial district was created there. It had been inhabited by poor Jews. During World War II, some houses were demolished, and a ghetto was created nearby. In the years 1951-1953, 138 large trees, mainly chestnut trees, were brought from Szczecin and planted on debris - this is how present Old Town Park was created. At that time, this place was called "The Herring Park". The reason was the smell coming from the basements of the demolished houses where fish storehouses were located before the war.Less
