The Museum of Independence Traditions is located in Łódź, in the former prison building at Długa street. There are two permanent expositions situated. The first one is dedicated to the history of the prison itself. Visitors can see documents and photos of prisoners, secret messages, objects made by prisoners, and equipment of the cells. The second exhibition presents the Polish path to independence from the Kościuszko Uprising to the Polish-Soviet War in 1920.
The base of current Museum of Independence Traditions was the Museum of History of Revolutionary Movement, created in 1959. Łódź was chosen as its headquarters as a city of workers. It was supposed to present the history of the socialist and communist movement, and the class struggle with the exploitation of working classes. In 1990, the profile of the Museum was changed. It has been documenting the whole of independence activities, mainly in Łódź and its region. The exhibition of the road to freedom shows, through documents, uniforms, weapons, banners, uprising memorabilia, and letters, the processes of forming of the independence movement in Łódź and its surroundings. It also allows visitors to familiarize theirselves with the chronology of uprisings, the idea of "working at the foundations", and forms of patriotism unrelated to the fight. The other exhibition is dedicated to the history of the Museum building. Political prisoners incarcerated there, from the end of the 19th century to 1953, remained not only names but also people who tried to live a normal life in prison reality.Less
