The Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography is the largest museum in Łódź. In December 2012, it had more than 260,354 catalog items in its collections. The range of this impressive collection includes archeology and ethnography objects, numismatics, and theater dolls.
In the archaeological department there is a permanent exhibition entitled "The past excavated from the soil" where excavations from past historical epochs can be seen.In the ethnographic section you can see plentiful collections of folk art, folk costumes, and ritual props from the Opoczno, Rawa, Łowicz, and Sieradz regions.In the numismatic exhibition visitors can admire a collection of 160 gold coins, including 17th-century coins from Męka Księża, and a collection of ancient coins, and in particular the silver didrachma from Aegina from the 5th and 6th centuries BC.The Puppet Shows Department is the only institution in Poland where puppet theatre scenographies are collected.
