Julian Tuwim's Bench

Local name: Ławeczka Juliana Tuwima

Tuwim's Bench stands on Piotrkowska street and is part of the open-air Gallery of Great People of Łódź. The sculpture shows a poet who listens to someone who sits next to him. That someone can be anyone, because the place is unoccupied. In 2003, the bench received the Sculpture of the Year award.

Since 1999, Gallery of Great People of Łódź has been created along the Łódź boardwalk, Piotrkowska street. One of its elements is Tuwim's Bench. The poet was born in Łódź and also went to school there. In later years, he repeatedly emphasised his connections with the city.

The bench was made in 1999 by Wojciech Gryniewicz. Tuwim has been presented in an unbuttoned coat, with a lopsided hat, and with a book in his hand. According to the tradition, the guarantee of happiness is rubbing the nose of the poet.
