The Museum of "Dętka" Sewage is the newest branch of the Museum of the City of Łódź. It is located under Freedom Square, in a former reservoir for water used by Łódź waterworks. The aim of the museum is to show the underground, normally hidden from the view of people, buildings of Łódź. An exhibition devoted to the Łódź sewerage has been placed in the currently empty tank and channels departing from it. The exhibition is comprised of documents, photos, and objects used during the functioning of the network.
At the beginning of the 20th century, very intensive construction works had been carried out in Łódź to create a water and sewage system. Tens of kilometers of sewages and underground reservoirs were created which were forgotten in the post-war era. In 2008, the existence of the "Dętka" sewage and the rainwater tank under Freedom Square was brought back to the consciousness of people. It had been used for periodic cleaning of sewages. In the chamber located under the Square and the pathways departing from it, there are photos and documents that show the construction and operation of the Łódź sewages. There are also items used by water system workers. The Museum of "Dętka" Sewage was the first sewage opened for visitors in Poland. The museum also supports a variety of artistic activities, and in the facility exhibitions, performances, and happenings are held.Less
