Skull Chapel
Local name: Kaplica Czaszek
Located inside:
St. Bartholomew the Apostle Church
This unique chapel is a shared tomb of the fallen in the Silesian Wars in 1740-1741 and 1744-1745, and also victims of contagious diseases from the 18th century. The ceiling and walls are covered with 3000 skulls and human bones. The ceiling under the floor is filled with another several dozen thousand skeletal remains which form a 2-meter pile.
Once a year on 14th August at midnight a service in honor of dead takes place. The Baroque chapel was built in 1776 by priest Wacław Tomaszek who collected and stack bones for 8 years. The chapel is a unique and exceptional place which makes to wonder about the fragility of life. The Skull Chapel is the only object of that type in Poland and one of the three in Europe.Less
