Church of St. Adalbert

Local name: Kościół św. Wojciecha

The Church of St. Adalbert, located in the main square in Kraków, is a small building which history dates back to the end of the 11th or 12th century. It was rebuilt many times what can be easily noticed from its numerous architectonic styles. The underground houses the exposition dedicated to the history of the main square, Saint Adalbert of Prague, and the building itself.

The legend says that Saint Adalbert preached here and the wooden church was built here to commemorate his stay. The archaeological research has shown that under the walls of today's church are traces of previous brick and wooden structures.

It's a single-nave church with Baroque interior and barrel vault. It consists of the 17th-century copy of painting St. Mary Major and the 15th-century crucifix.

What is interesting, the Church of St. Adalbert is located 2-2,6 m lower than its original position. It's because the main square has been gradually elevated.
