Kołobrzeg Cathedral

Local name: Bazylika Kołobrzeg

The 14th-century Co-Cathedral is the only five-nave church in Poland. In the richly decorated Gothic building, extremely valuable equipment has survived including, among others, historic stalls, a crucifix "figure of life" from the fourteenth century, a baptismal font or three wooden altars. The church is the most important monument of Kołobrzeg.

Information about the date of commencement of the church construction has not been preserved. Presumably, it could have happened in the early fourteenth century. It was built with panache and land subsidence was not taken into account. Therefore, for the next two centuries, numerous changes were introduced to protect the building from degradation. Until the twentieth century, the church suffered a lot of destruction, but luckily it survived to our times.

The interior of the temple is full of old and valuable things. Noteworthy is a bronze baptismal font from the mid-fourteenth century. This is the oldest baptistry made of metal, located in Pomerania. Of the 22 medieval altars, 4 survived, of which 3 are in the Co-Cathedral. The paintings "Adoration of the Magi", "Crucifixion" and "Christ before Pilate" come from around 1500.
