Church of St. Adalbert

Local name: Kościół św. Wojciecha

The church is located in the place where the history of Kielce started. Although it comes from the 18th century, it is a successor of the previous church which stood there even before the times of the location law. The picturesque, baroque church is one of the most recognizable monuments in the city.

The lands surrounding the Church of Saint Adalbert of Prague were inhabited since the early Middle Ages. The first wooden church of this name was built in the 12th century. Its remains were discovered on today's church square. They are the evidence that the settlement from before the location law existed there.

The brick church was built in the second half of the 18th century. Founded by canon Józef Jan Rogalla, after some time turned out to be not big enough and was expanded at the end of the 19th century. The church became the presbytery to which the part with three naves was added. The slim tower topped by the pointed spire was placed near the transept. The interior of the church is decorated with paintings by Jan Strzyka. The figure of the Pensive Christ called 'The Lighthouse of the dead' can be seen near the western wall. It's a remain after former graveyard.
