Drzewica Castle is are well-preserved ruins of the defensive building constructed between 1527 and 1535. It combines decorativeness of Baroque and rawness of Renaissance. Rumor has it, that participants of the Kościuszko Uprising hid 12 cannons in the neighborhood. According to another one, ghosts of women accused of magic and thrown off the castle's tower can be spotted in the ruins.
The castle was founded by Archbishop of Gniezno - Maciej Drzewicki - who wanted his home to outshine neighboring buildings. He even competed with King Sigismund I the Old who had been rebuilding the Wawel Castle. The sandstone and brick stronghold was surrounded by two moats and 2-meter walls. It had a spacious residential area, chapel, and four corner towers visible from afar. The times of its glory were ended by the great fire in 1814. Since that time, it wasn't renovated and have gradually fallen into ruin.Less
