Jasna Góra Monastery

Local name: Jasna Góra

The Jasna Góra Monastery is an exceptionally important place of Marian devotions in Poland. It's surrounded by defensive walls with gates leading to the courtyard. The center of the monastery is the basilica which oldest part (presbytery) was built in the 15th century. A large part of the complex is occupied by the monastery and its altars, library and other buildings. The area also consists of the armory, Treasury of National Remembrance and the museum.

Situated in Częstochowa, the Jasna Góra Monastery is probably the most popular monastery with the Pauline Fathers complex in Poland. Its churches contain a lot of valuable monuments and sacral art.

Jasna Góra was a witness of many key historical events for Poland. Numerous battles took place on its slopes such as two Sweden sieges, the siege during the Bar Confederation and the battle during Lubomirski's rebellion.
