Weaver’s Houses

Local name: Domy Tkaczy

The complex of 12 monumental houses from the beginning of the 18th century is the only such well-preserved object in Europe. Part of the wooden constructions with shake roofs serves as a residential area while the rest is opened to the public.

One of the buildings presents monumental spinning wheels, looms, box irons, and other items related to weaving. Building no. 17 houses a cafe while no. 19 consists of art handloom workshop where visitors can purchase flax wares.

Weaver’s Houses are commonly known as 12 Apostles. It is because of their number and also the fact they were built in 1707 by Cistercians from Krzeszów. What is interesting, just as in the Holy Bible, the house called Judas didn't survive - it was destroyed during the fire.

12 houses were used by local weavers as a home and workplace. They were constructed during the dynamic development of the city which was owed to the flax cultivation. Chełmsko was an important center of cloth and linen making at the beginning of the 18th century. Fabrics produced here were sold in entire Europe and even in America.
