Within the Bydgoszcz market, limited to approximately 100 × 125 m, the city hall, a number of historic tenement houses, two important historical monuments - Battle and Martyrdom of the Bydgoszcz Land and Children Playing with Goose are located. In the window of one of the tenement houses, a figure of famous Mr. Twardowski also appears twice a day.
This main square of the city is dated back to 1346, when King Casimir the Great ordered building it. Initially, it had been located on an island between the Brda and Młynówka rivers and moats of the city and castle. It was commercial and cultural centre of the city, as well as the venue for execution of court judgments. Around the 16th century, the wooden architecture of the market had been replaced with a brick one. Most of the houses has been destroyed during World War II, but until the present day, the entire square has been systematically revitalized. An interesting fact of the market is connected to the former Jesuits' church of Saint Ignatius Loyola. Supposedly, as one of the fascist victims had been dying, she leant her hand against the church wall, leaving a mark that couldn't be removed, forcing the occupants to destroy the temple.Less
