The city walls of Bydgoszcz have only been preserved in a small percentage until today. The current length of fortifications is only 1/5 of the original perimeter. In the city, you can see three fragments of these fortifications, and their greater part bears traces of modern reconstructions. All three of them are located on Pod Blankami Street.
The first fragment of the preserved walls is the oldest, and considered the most interesting. However, visitors can only see the outer part of the fortifications because the interior was used as a load-bearing wall for the building set there. In this part, visitors can also see the only remaining fortified tower. The second fragment is visible from both: the outside and the inside. Next to the fortifications, there is an open-air museum where you can admire part of the fortifications discovered during archaeological excavation. The third part of the walls is the newest and the best preserved.Originally, the city had been protected by wooden and earthen embankments. Afterwards, they were replaced with a wooden pallisade, and the brick walls have been built in the 15th century. The fortifications were significantly damaged during the Swedish Deluge and the Great Northern War. In the 19th century, the demolition of part of the walls had began.Less
