The historic hydrotechnical building is a place where ships are overcoming the differences in water levels accumulated by Farny and Ulgowy weirs. The sluice mechanism allows raising ships that sail up the Brda River by 3 meters. Visitors can also see it during the Bydgoszcz Water Tram tour. One of the two distributaries of Brda flows through the lock, while the other one flows around the Mill Island, as the Młynówka River.
The Municipal Lock was built in 1908-1915 as one of the investments during the reconstruction of the Bydgoszcz Canal. It was not the first, because its precursor had been built in 1774. The first sluice had collapsed and in its place another ones were built in 1790, in 1805, and in 1882. Wooden structures weren't durable, and when exposed to water, they caused many technical problems. The present concrete, single-chamber and dock building has sizes of 57.4 x 9.6 m, is 78.7 m long, and is operated by a manual or electric mechanism. Lifting time of the floating units is about 20 minutes. The facility is part of the Hydrowęzeł Bydgoszcz (Hydrojunction Bydgoszcz) and is part of the international waterway E70 Wisła-Odra.Less
