The city walls in Byczyna preserved in almost perfect condition since the Middle Ages. It is one of a few monuments of that type in Poland. The stone and brick fortification consists of two tower-gates and one tower surrounded by the moat.
The city walls surrounding the oldest part of Byczyna were built probably in the 15th or 16th century. The construction has elliptical shape and length of 950 m. Their height in the tallest point amounts to 6 m. They are reinforced by massive scarps. The walls have two gate-towers - Polish and German - on the west and east sides. They were built in the 15th century on a square plan. In the beginning, they were as tall as the walls but were extended in later years. The walls preserved narrow shooting windows and ogival passages. The largest part is the South Tower, also called Piaskowa (Sand). Its entire surface is filled with densely arranged lancet holes and small windows closed with flattened arches.Less
