Palace Park

Local name: Park Pałacowy

The Palace Park in Białowieża was founded in the 19th century and was an integral part of the private hunting residence of the Russian tsars. It is the only such area located by the tsarist hunting residence in Poland. It was designed by Walerian Kronenberg, fashionable designer specialised of this type of spaces. The park is also often visited by animals - mainly wild boars and deers.

The garden and park were created in the English style. It meant that the park was supposed to look natural. Crowns of trees were not given equal shapes, plants were planted in groups or separately. The effort was made to ensure that even the meadows kept its natural character, through the rare mowing and fertilization. The hidden avenues were led along curved lines and they were not hardened. In the southern part of the park, at the foot of the palace hill, two ponds with islets were dug. Between them there is a wide dike, on which an obelisk from 1752 is located. It was placed there to commemorate the stay of king of Poland, Augustus III, in Białowieża.

The palace and park complex also includes historic buildings, for example: a manor house, a former forester's lodge, a bathhouse, a warehouse, a mill, and a stable. Unfortunately, you can not admire the former tsar's palace, because it burned down in 1944, and its ruins were pulled down. In its place a new building was built, which now houses a natural museum, a restaurant, a hotel and the headquarters of the Białowieża National Park.
