Museum of Southern Podlasie
Local name: Muzeum Południowego Podlasia
The museum is located in the gate and the tower of the Radziwiłł Palace in Biała Podlaska. It consists of a large collection of icons containing about 1400 paintings of which the most valuable are presented in the exhibition. There is also a collection of paintings dedicated to horses. The separate department shows the tragic history of inhabitants of Southern Podlasie from 1939 to 1947.
The museum's collections are largely dedicated to three most important subjects related to the region. The first exhibition "Icon - a holy mystery" - presents paintings retrieved from Orthodox churches in Podlasie which no longer exist or saved from taking away.
The second exhibition "Horses, horseriders, and carriages in Polish paintings in the 19th and 20th century" is related to the stud farm in Janów Podlaski which is located in the area. There are, among others, works by Józef and Wojciech Kossak and Piotr Michałowski. The collection is complemented by artistic crafts and sculptures.
A distinct part of the museum's collections is the historical exhibition dedicated to the history of Podlasie in World War II and right after it ended. It consists of documents, photographs, and souvenirs related to guerilla warfare which took place in the region. It is presented in the cells of the former headquarters of Gestapo.
The palace complex is the most valuable monument in the city. There is also a palace chapel in the park.
