The Armed Forces Museum (Forsvarsmuseet) in Oslo is located within the Akershus Fortress. The exhibition shows the history of Norwegian defense from the Viking age, through World War II, to the current situation. Visitors will see antique defense machines (e.g. a cannon on a sleigh from the 19th century) and a large model presenting the tactical operations of Norwegian troops during the Battle of Narvik.
The exhibition is divided into several parts, focuses not only on history, but also shows enormous technical progress in the Norwegian army. The museum building itself is also worth attention - it is a former arsenal, i.e. a place where weapons were stored.
The museum was founded in the 1940s, but initially it was only open to military personnel. Thanks to King Olaf V, he was made available to a wider public in 1978. Currently, temporary exhibitions are often organized here.
