Monolith

Local name: Monolitten

"Monolitten" is a sculpture by Gustav Vigeland that can be admired in one part of the Frogner Park in Oslo. It is a column over 17 meters high, which consists of 121 human figures. They are naked silhouettes of women, men and children. Among them was the image of Vigeland himself.

The sculpture was placed in the central part of Vigeland Park, on a small hill. Stairs lead to it, on which there are more silhouettes - there are 36 of them here. Together with the column they form a whole, which is to symbolize the hardships of human life.

Gustav Vigeland was responsible for the design of the group of sculptures, but the whole team of sculptors and stonemasons worked on them - also after the artist's death. The idea of decorating the park with sculptures was born out of a single fountain order. The dominant motive is the child's figure.
