Wooden Shoe Workshop 'de Zaanse Schans' - Wooden shoe museum
Local name: Klompenmakerij ‘De Zaanse Schans’ - Klompenmuseum
Klompenmakerij Kooijman is a museum, gallery and working plant where traditional Dutch clogs are made - wooden work shoes. The company was founded in 1974 by Jaap and Ineke Kooijman. Their workshop was created at Zaanse Schans, a place of protection for Dutch craft and industrial heritage. Currently, clog production remains a family business - the gallery and plant are visited by approximately one million tourists each year.
Traditional clogs were so popular that at the end of the 19th century special machines were introduced to quickly process wooden blocks, hollow them and give the footwear the right form. Clogs are produced at such antique equipment at Klompenmakerij Kooijman during shows and special workshops.
In the gallery you can see different types of wooden footwear that was used both for work and special occasions. Clogs used in official situations were carefully painted, carved, decorated with metal and leather. There were also models specially for the winter - equipped with non-slip spikes and sports clogs - with attached skates or roller skates.
