St. Cataldus Church

Local name: Knisja ta 'Santa Cataldus

The church Katalda is the only sacred object on the island dedicated to this saint. This small temple has a real gem. They are ancient catacombs. Inside, you can admire the rare agape tables - huge platforms carved in the rock. On the anniversary of the burial, the whole family gathered around them for a festive meal to commemorate the dead.

The crypts from the turn of the second and third century were initially a Punic tomb. The graves in the catacombs have an unusual four-poster bed, while most of the preserved ancient tombstones have been carved out of the rock.

Saint Katald lived in the 7th century. This Irish religious during his ministry was the bishop of Rachau in Ireland and the alleged bishop of Taranto in today's Puglia. His memory in Malta was spread by the Normans.
