Xlendi Tower Munxar is the oldest existing observation tower on Gozo, one of the 10 small watchtowers and watchtowers that the Knights had built during the time of Grand Master Juan de Lascaris-Castellara. All of them were created in 1637-1652. They were located at such a distance from each other that their crews could see the signals they were sending.
The tower near the village of Xlendi was erected in 1650. The structure consists of a base about 10 m high and the tower is 12 m high. Originally a 6-pound gun was installed at the top of the building, capable of shelling the bay. Later, they were replaced by a smaller, 4-pound signaling cannon.
The primary function of the towers was to protect against an unexpected attack from the sea and to track smugglers. In peacetime, messages were sent through them between Gozo and Grand Harbor. During World War II, the tower served as observation functions. Currently, it is only a museum and tourist observation tower.
