Fortifications of the Old Town

The system of city fortifications was expanded from the Middle Ages until the 19th century. In its glory days it was one of the best-protected European fortresses. About 10% of the defensive walls, forts and towers that can be visited have survived to modern times. The whole was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
