Janów on the River Neris is a city known in Lithuania as the capital of the summer solstice. A large cultural festival and sports competitions are held here, attended by viewers from all over the country.
The city was founded in the mid-18th century by Bishop Kossakowski. He also founded the Trinitarian monastery and the Church of St. st. James the Apostle. A lot of classicist and eclectic buildings have also been preserved in the center. it also includes the building of the Jonava National Museum and the Library.
Until World War II, many Jews lived in Janów. Today, you can see the unfortunately badly neglected synagogue building here. An obelisk was erected in the place where the Germans massacred the Jewish population in 1941.
Janów's big attraction is located on the slope of St. Jana Jonava ski resort. It has several easy ski slopes, the longest of which is approx. 200 m. It is one of the few places in Lithuania where you can go skiing.
