Daugavpils located in the south of Latvia is known primarily from the remains of the great Russian nineteenth century fortress. Most of the monuments located here come from the period of its construction and greatest splendor.
Although Daugavpils was founded in the Middle Ages by the Swordsmen, there are no monuments from this period. This is related to the construction of a Russian fortress in the 19th century, under which the entire Old Town was demolished.
Today, you can see the entire star-shaped defensive structure surrounded by canals. Although the buildings have not survived, but only the outline of the whole, for lovers of military architecture it is a real treat.
Today, the interior of the fortress is mostly built up with post-war blocks, but you can also find somewhat eclectic and Art Nouveau tenement houses from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The most important building is the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Boris and Gleb with many valuable icons inside. Nearby are also the neoclassical churches of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint. Peter in chains.
