The modern art gallery was founded in 1872 by Baron Pasquale Revoltel. The baron, after he left his house, gave the gallery all the works, furniture and books he had. The main building, designed by Friedrich Hitzig, was built in 1858. Today's museum consists of three buildings with a total exhibition area of 4,000 square meters.
