The marble column was built in the 2nd century AD. It was created to commemorate Marcus Aurelius, but on its top since 1589 stands a monument of Saint. Paul the Apostle. The column measures 30 m in height. Its stem is surrounded by a decorative carved ribbon, on which scenes from battles conducted by Marcus Aurelius are placed.
