The church was built at the turn of the 10th and 11th centuries on the remains of early Christian temples from the 4th and 7th centuries. The basilica is a great example of a local Romanesque style. The church is located in the place where, according to tradition, in 44 he went ashore St. Peter during his journey from Antioch to Rome.
