ORTA SAN GIULIOItaly
Basilica of San Giulio
Local name: Basilica di San Giulio
Church built on the small islet of San Giulio in Lake Orta. Its origins date back to the 5th century, and the present temple was erected between the 10th and 13th centuries. Until today, despite several reconstructions, the Romanesque body of the building with a four-sided belfry with bifora-like windows has survived. The interior is mostly covered with baroque decorations, although fragments of Romanesque frescoes have been preserved in the aisle and under the choir. The carved pulpit also comes from this period. In the crypt under the church are the remains of Saint Julius.
