Erected in the 18th century, the temple is considered by many to be one of the seven baroque wonders of the world. It was built after the previous cathedral was destroyed by the earthquakes in the 16th and 17th centuries. It is a structure on a cross plan with a magnificent, undulating facade covered with sculptural decorations. The interior is decorated with stucco and bas-reliefs, and in the presbytery there is an Early Renaissance altar. The church, along with other baroque monuments of the city, is on the UNESCO list.
