Basilica of San Babila

Local name: Basilica di San Babila

The Roman Catholic church of San Babila is dedicated to Saint Babylas of Antioch. The church has kept its original medieval form to modern times. Inside there are chapels from the Renaissance period, a fresco by brush Luigi Cavenaghi depicting Saint Babylas and three other children who died with him in martyrdom, and a picture of Saint Francis of Assisi by Giuseppe Bertini.

The church was built in the 11th century. In the 16th century, it underwent reconstruction, during which it received, among others, a baroque facade. The renovation of the temple took place in the nineteenth century, when the building was restored to the appearance of a medieval basilica. At the beginning of the 20th century, a neo-Roman facade was created, designed by Paolo Ces-Bianchi, which perfectly fits into the style of the temple. A belfry was also added, which collapsed in the 16th century.
