Established in the 19th century, the square is known for two monumental buildings: the Arc de Triomphe and Porta San Galo, a former city gate. Originally, the square was named after the Italian entrepreneur Camillo Cavour, then a dignitary from the times of Italian fascism Costanzo Ciano, and since 1945 it has been known as Freedom Square.
