Favignana is the largest of the Aegadian Islands in the Mediterranean Sea. It is famous for its nice beaches, charming coves and good conditions for spending holidays.
The island can be reached by ferry or hydrofoil from the port of Trapani in Sicily. There are several towns here, which in the past lived mainly from tuna fishing, and now their inhabitants also handle tourism. Favignana is quite rough and rocky. Mainly low scrub grows here, and the banks in some places form high, steep cliffs.
The most important attractions of Favignana are related to the possibility of a seaside holiday. There are sandy and pebble beaches here, some of which are hidden in small bays. The most popular are Cala Rossa, whose water turns red when the sun rises at a right angle, Cala Azzura, Bue Marino Beach and Cala Rotonda.
The waters off the coast of Favignana are great for snorkeling. Famous diving spots are Grotta Perciata, Punta Fanfalo and Cavallo. You can also go on boat trips with local fishermen to the seaside grottos.
There are also many traces of the past on the island. At the highest point of Favignana stands the Castles of Santa Caterina and San Giacomo, reachable via a footpath. From the top there is a beautiful view of the entire archipelago. The former Florio factory now houses a museum, while the Genovese Cave houses rock carvings.
