Established in 1995, the park aims to protect the volcano Vesuvius and its surroundings, which is one of the most famous archaeological open-air museums in the world. The most important archaeological sites are located in the ancient cities destroyed by the volcano - Herculaneum, Pompeii and Oplonti - inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
