The area of the ancient city, destroyed in 79 AD by the eruption of Vesuvius, is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. In 1709 a Roman amphitheater was found buried under volcanic mud (layer up to 12 m thick). The biggest discovery to date is the Papyrus House, where 1785 scrolls with works of Epicureans were found.
