The complex stands on a hill above the village of Castiglione, strategically placed to control territory important in the Middle Ages. It is currently inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The museum includes a historic church, a baptistery with a cycle of frescoes dating back to 1435, and numerous works of art belonging to the church.
