The palace was built on the orders of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, later Pope Paul III. It was supposed to be his summer residence. The works started in 1515, and the author of the project was Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola. In the middle of the building there is a circular courtyard with two-level arcades. Terrace gardens also belong to the palace.
