The villa is located in the old estate of the Marquis of Zambeccari, built in the 18th century. After 1849, the building became the seat of the Austrian army, and a prison was located in the medieval tower erected in the garden. In the 1960s, the villa was purchased by the municipality of Bologna and made available to the public. The Museum of Textiles and Wallpaper "Vittorio Zironi" has been located here since 1990.
