One of the city's symbols, the fortress was most probably built in 1132 on the initiative of the Sicilian king Norman Roger II. Soon after, the building was completely destroyed, and its reconstruction was undertaken in the 13th century by Emperor Frederick II. Representatives of the Anjou dynasty, Sforza resided here, and later the building served as a prison.
