The New Gate is one of the eight gates that lead to the Old City of Jerusalem. You can enter the Christian quarter through it. It is a wide passage decorated with a stone portal with a large central keystone.
The New Gate was built in 1889 at the request of the Ottoman administration. It was to ensure better communication between the Christian district and the administration buildings of various Christian associations located on the outside of the walls. Right at the gate is the headquarters of the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land.
The gate is now an important element of Jerusalem's communication map. Most likely, however, it will be closed shortly due to the construction of a high-speed rail line on its outside.
