Montefiore Windmill

Local name: Montefiore Windmill

Montefiore Windmill is a windmill in Jerusalem that serves as a landmark.
The attraction was designed as a mill in 1857 and stood on a slope opposite the western city walls of Jerusalem, where three years later a new Jewish district was erected. The windmill was restored in 2012, today it functions as a museum dedicated to the achievements of Moses Montefiore. It was thanks to his efforts that a Jewish neighborhood was created in the area.

Montefiore Windmill was designed by a duo of architects, the Holman brothers. Its construction, which was achieved thanks to Montefiore's efforts, was part of a broader development program. Both the windmill and the printing and textile factory located nearby were to help Jews living in Palestine become self-sufficient.

The mill was not very successful due to the lack of wind, but it operated until 1878, until the appearance of the first steam mill in Jerusalem. Today, in the resources of the museum located here you can admire, among others, a replica of the famous carriage used by Montefiore during his travels.
