Absalom's grave is a stone building standing in the Cedron Valley. It was built on the orders of Absalom, son of King David. There is a burial chamber in it. The tomb consists of a rectangular body topped with a cylinder with a rounded pyramid.
Absalom was the third of David's sons. He killed his older brother Amnon in revenge for rape on sister Tamar. When he regained David's favor, he rebelled against him. Absalom died fleeing from the battlefield, killed by David's army commander Joab.
The tomb was built during Absalom's lifetime. However, his decorations are much later. Scientists date them to the Hellenistic period. The building is surrounded by a stone Doric frieze. The facade is decorated with semi-columns. On the walls you can see traces of the impacts of stones. This is an old Jewish custom in which they show their disapproval of Absalom's behavior.
