Mount Hermon

Local name: Mount Hermon

The mountain is 2,814 meters above sea level and is the highest peak of the Antiliban mountain range, and at the same time the highest peak in Israel and Syria. The Israeli-Syrian border runs through it, and since 1974 its top and part of the slopes have the status of a demilitarized zone. It houses a UN unit, which is the highest position of this organization in the world.

The summit consists of three peaks of similar height. In spring and winter, it is completely covered with snow, which is why it is sometimes called "snow mountain" or "gray-haired mountain". The only winter sports center in Israel is located on the slopes. There are several ski runs and a toboggan run here. There is also a ski school here.

Mount Hermon is mentioned several times in the Old and New Testaments. It also appears in the Sumerian epic of Gilgamesh, dated to the 2nd millennium BC. On the slopes of the mountain, there are also remains of about 30 chapels and temples from the Phoenician, Hellenistic and Roman epochs.
