Quin Abbey

Local name: Mainistir Chuinche

Quin Abbey is located in County Clare. These are the ruins of a medieval Franciscan monastery. A church with a square tower and large fragments of residential buildings with cloisters and an internal courtyard have survived to our times.

According to scientists, the first monastery in this area was founded around the 7th-8th centuries. It operated until the 13th century, when it was demolished. A new abbey for the Franciscans was built at the beginning of the 15th century by Sioda Cam MacNamara. It functioned until the Reformation and in the 15th century it experienced its greatest boom. In the following centuries, it experienced damage several times, and the last monk who lived here died in 1820.

Today, Quin Abbey is a picturesque ruin standing in the undulating landscape of the Irish hills. A square tower with decorative corners dominates the buildings. The church and buildings do not have a roof, but you can still easily imagine what the shape of the monastery looked like in its heyday.
