Brú na Bóinne is one of the most important complexes from the Neolithic period in the world. It consists of megalithic corridor tombs of Knowth, Newgrange and Dowth, and about ninety other prehistoric monuments. The tour takes place only with a guide, and tours start at the Visitor Center in Donore. In 1993 the building was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List
The first settlements in this area date back to around 6000 years ago, but the main structures date back to around 5000 BC, i.e. the Neolithic period. The complex covers an area of 780 hectares. Most of the monuments are concentrated on the north side of the Boyne River. Attention is drawn to the builders' knowledge of astronomy, which is most evident in the Newgrange corridor tomb. The archeological culture associated with this place is often called the "Boyne culture".
