Newgrange is a neolithic corridor tomb that is part of the Brú na Bóinne complex. It is dated to 3200 BC, which makes it older than the Egyptian pyramids. It consists of a large, circular, mound with an internal stone passage and chambers in which human bones were found. Many Newgrange stones are covered in megalithic art. Newgrange can only be visited in groups with a guide. Trips start at the Brú na Bóinne Tourist Center.
Part of the material that Newgrange was built from comes from such distant places as Mournes and Wicklow. Scientists do not agree on what this place was used for, but it is believed to have religious significance. Its entrance coincides with the rising sun during the winter solstice. To experience the phenomenon of winter solstice from the interior of Newgrange, you must take part in the annual lottery at the Brú na Bóinne Tourist Center. Only twenty people are chosen, each of whom can bring one guest.
