Knowth

Local name: Cnóbha

Knowth is the largest transitional tomb in the Neolithic Brú na Bóinne complex. It consists of a large mound and 17 smaller satellite tombs. The mound is approximately 12 meters high and 67 meters long. There are two tombs located along the east-west line. Numerous examples of megalithic art have been found at Knowth. Visiting is only possible with a guide. Tours depart from the Brú na Bóinne Visitor Center in Donore.

The large mound dates back to around 3200 BC. When the hill was abandoned, the mound collapsed, obstructing the entrances to both corridors. The site remained virtually unused for nearly two thousand years, except for the brief period when it was used as a cemetery. This is evidenced by the discovery of 35 cyst graves. It wasn't until the beginning of our era that a fort was built here and Knowth was first inhabited.
