Skaftafell is a vast, very sparsely populated area, much of which is part of Vatnajökull National Park. It includes the Vatnajökull Glacier and the surrounding glacial valleys with beautiful waterfalls and picturesque coastal lagoons.
In the past, Skaftafell was a separate national park, but in 2008 it was connected to other protected areas in the area and now they form Iceland's largest Vatnajökull National Park.
Part of the park is covered with a glacier that can only be entered with a guide. However, there are also areas, mainly including glacial valleys, where you can walk freely on your own. This way you can reach, among others to Svartifoss Waterfall, Hundafoss Waterfall and Magnúsarfoss Waterfall.
Numerous smaller and larger rivers flow from under the glacier. They form a lagoon with floating ice blocks. The most famous is Jökulsárlón. You can meet seals in the bay.
