Sziklakórház is literally a hospital in the Rock, and this name perfectly characterizes the facility. The hospital, which also served as a shelter, is located in caves under the Castle Hill in Buda and a network of tunnels leads to it. Currently, the Museum of the Hospital in Rock operates here, which presents the infrastructure and equipment of the facility from the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s to visitors. In addition to numerous original period items, we will also see wax figures depicting hospital staff and patients. Sightseeing is only possible with a guide.
The hospital was built during World War II and was used during the siege of Budapest at the turn of 1944 and 1945. Despite huge supply shortages, hospital personnel saved thousands of civilians and soldiers. After the war, the hospital was used only once, during the revolution in 1956. In the 1950s, the building was converted into an atomic bunker, and in 1962 it was modernized and equipped with equipment needed in the event of a chemical attack.
